Training Times and Costs

Rowing is immensely rewarding, but it's also fairly costly to get into. Luckily for us, Sport Roehampton MASSIVELY subsidise the cost of everything!

To row at a Tideway club can cost somewhere in the region of £450 a year. A year's membership with the Roehampton team only costs £120 or £90* for a 'social' membership. Buying a competitive membership means you are entitled to race at events throughout the year, including prestigious races such as Hammersmith Head of the River Race where 500 crews from across the globe gather in London to test the competition. We also enter British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions around the UK. With your competitive membership, you will also receive a year's membership to British Rowing, which provides insurance, free subscription to a rowing magazine, and discounts at various shops and attractions in the UK.

We also compete in Varsity annually against Buckingham New University which is always an excellent event.

Our social rowers are welcome to join at any session except for those a few weeks before a race, and are under no obligation to compete.

The required kit for competitive rowers costs around £80 for the unisuit, and then black leggings and a white long sleeved top can be bought very cheaply at a sports shop, or from our university estore.

We train three days a week: Tuesday morning 0630-0830, Wednesday afternoon 1330-1700, and Friday morning 0630-0830. The early mornings may seem tough at first but being able to see London at dawn never ceases to impress me! Waking up so early is also a great way of getting the most out of your day, and if you don't have a huge amount of contact hours each week it can sometimes be hard to motivate yourself to leave the house. Morning sessions are the best time to work on technique and fitness as the river is quiet, and the boathouse is empty. Another bonus is that we'll occasionally hit Wetherspoons for a cooked breakfast after training!
